Abolition of Slave Trade Bicentennary 1807-2007

March 25th 2007 will mark the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the slave trade in 1807. The Department for Culture Media and Sport have published a pamphlet setting out all the funding and assistance that the Government is planning to help remember the suffering that occurred during slavery and the bravery of those who opposed and resisted.

There is now an exhibition in Parliament which I launched whick comemorates the Abolition of the Act and is free to all UK residents until 21st September 2007. For more details visit: http://www.parliament.uk/what_s_on/exhibitions/slavetrade.cfm

I have been campaigning in Parliament through proposing an Early Day Motion and asking Parliamentary Questions to ensure that grass roots organisations receive the funds they need to make sure that slavery is remembered.

The Heritage Lottery Fund is funding projects that add to the collective understanding of the trans-Atlantic slave trade and its impact on national heritage. They have already announced awards of over £16 million for projects and have produced a guide for community-based organisations wanting to bid.

If you are involved in an organisation in Brent that you think could benefit from these funds, you can find a copy of the guide produced by the Heritage Lottery Fund by visiting: www.hlf.org.uk
